Eva Mozes Kor, tells the
story of herself and her twin sister, Miriam, from early in their lives in the
small village of Portz, Rumania to their settlement in Israel. Jewish faith was
vitally important to their lives in every way. Life was simple. She lived
before the time of electricity in her birth home. Her family was the richest
family and only Jewish one in the community. She knew everyone and was in good
terms with them—until the Hungarian Army came to town in 1940. The book gives a fairly detailed account of
how things changed, slowly at first, and then much faster as the Nazi regime
took over, leading to the family’s arrest, trip to Auschwitz, separation of
parents and children, life for her in Auschwitz, release, and early post
Auschwitz life.
Eva was an extraordinarily
strong person, totally dedicated to living through the ordeals and helping
Miriam do so. I think that that, and the fact Dr. Mengele wanted them alive for
his medical experiments because they were twins, got them through the Holocaust.
There are English errors
and several repetitions in the stories she tells, but I highly recommend the
book. It is an important part of our human history!
Eva now lives in Terre
Haute, IN. Jim and I attended one of her lectures and had a chance to talk with
her. I bought her book at that time. While it tears at your heart that any
human being could commit the crimes the Nazis did, it is also refreshing to
know that some are able to live through such horrific experiences and end up
forgiving the perpetrators. Truly amazing. If you look her up on the Internet,
you can find a video of her forgiving one of her Nazi jailers in person.
